Libeco. Lagae Weavers of fine Belgian Linen from 1854
Established
in 1858, Libeco. Lagae is one of the largest weavers of linen in Europe,
and remains a vibrant family run business with a heritage and values dating
back to the nineteenth century.
Flax has been farmed and linen fabrics woven in Flanders for centuries.
By the 18th century, Meulebeke, situated near Kortrijk, had emerged as
one of the villages with the largest linen production. By the 1800's,
there were dozens of weaving firms operating in and around Meulebeke.
Of these, only two remained: Libeco and Lagae Linens. These two traditional
companies merged in1997 to form Libeco Lagae.
Libeco.Lagae was officially granted the title of Belgian Royal Warrant
Holder in 2006.
Holders of the prestigious Masters of Linen mark, Libeco constantly refresh
the market for beautiful linens with their unique collection of Libeco
bedlinen, Libeco tabelinen and Libeco nightwear.
Libeco are famous for their devotion to producing linen of the highest
quality. Combined with a great instinct for relaxed colours and choice
of vintage inspired floral prints, the Libeco bedlinen collection has
been one of our personal favourites for many years.
Our customers are always delighted with the Libeco linens we send to
them, a tribute to the beauty and enduring quality of the Libeco bedlinens.
In Libeco's own words
"We believe that linen is part of a movement back to essential
values: calmer living, less is more, simplicity and quality are paramount."
"Bed linens:
Those made of linen are being rediscovered for their luxury and comfort.
Beyond just beauty, linen bedding has shown to promote restful sleep
by insulating against heat and cold, providing breathe-ability and
absorption, and possessing anti-allergenic properties."
Libeco have always been concerned with the ecological impact of spinning,
weaving and finishing linen, and have made significant efforts to reduce
the impact on the environment by reducing the use of power and water.
Flax (Linen) has been grown for thousands of years, and always with great
respect for the environment. It naturally requires fewer chemicals than
other crops, no irrigation, is gentle on the land and is easy to incorporate
into modern crop rotation cycles. The processing of flax requires little
energy and does not harm nature. The Water retting process has been replaced
by the environmentally friendly dew-retting on the field.
ECO LINEN FROM LIBECO-LAGAE
Another great advantage of linen is its beautiful "natural"
colour obtained by the interaction of the plant with the sun, the rain
and the earth. Approximately 40 % of Libeco sales come from these natural,
undyed fabrics. All of Libeco's natural fabrics can wear the Libeco ECO
LINEN label : tests have shown that no chemical residues are found in
the final product.
