Care of Pure Linen Bedlinen
Pure Linen bedlinen is surprisingly easy to care for, as it can be machine
washed then line dried or lightly tumble dried on a low heat, just as
you would wash fine cotton bedlinen. Pure Linen responds especially well
to washing, and your bedlinen will become softer, more absorbent and more
luminous over time.
Choose the right washing agents. Detergents that contain bleaching agents
are perfect for white linen but should not be used for washing coloured
linen as it can lead to discolouration or spotting.
Only bleach-free detergents should be used for washing coloured linen
bedlinen. Use pure soap or gentle detergents. Soap works best in soft
water.
Never use chlorine bleaches to avoid damage to the fibre. Only oxygen-type
bleaches should be used for white linen laundering. However, avoid bleach
completely when washing coloured, spun or embroidered linen.
If the water you use is hard due to a high lime content (like our Sussex
water) then it is a good idea to add a softening agent, especially for
darker-coloured articles. Use plenty of water because linen is very water-absorbent.
Water temperature should be selected according to the care instructions
attached to your linen article. If the temperature exceeds the recommended
maximum temperature it may lead to fabric shrinkage.
Whether washing by hand or by machine, linen items have to be thoroughly
rinsed in plenty of water to remove all soap, detergent and residual soil
and prevent the formation of the so-called age spots due to the oxidation
effect.
Tips When drying your linen bedlinen
- Avoid wringing out your linen bedlinen, as it doesn't enjoy being
twisted.
- Use your washing line, washing machine, or use a gentle low heat tumble
dryer, but always remove while your linen bedlinen is still slightly
damp.
- If you have white linen bedlinen, then hang your linen out in the
sun to dry, as this will freshen and brighten it.
Ironing & how to avoid it
Modern weaving techniques and finishes mean that pure linen bedlinen
looks great without ironing. An especially good example of relaxed linen
bedlinen is the Libeco
vintage range for beautiful pre-washed softy rumpled linen.
If you enjoy the super crisp bedlinen finish which you can achieve with
ironed sheets and duvets, then pure linen will give you the best results.
Just make sure that you iron the linen bedlinen whilst it is still damp.
Iron on the wrong side first, then on the right side to bring out the
natural linen sheen, especially damasks and light-coloured linens. Iron
dark linens on the wrong side only. Heavier fabrics may need a slightly
higher temperature setting. Pure linen can withstand the highest temperature
setting on your iron, but test an inconspicuous corner first!
For a super crisp feel, you can use spray starch, and a steam iron on
a medium to hot setting.
